About the campaign

‘Don’t let your dreams go up in smokes…’ is a campaign by Nunkuwarrin Yunti of South Australia to prevent the uptake of smoking among young Aboriginal people in Adelaide. The campaign builds on the successful Rewrite Your Story project – winner of a 2013 Deadly Award!

The campaign encourages young people to have their say about smoking. It is about learning from our young people, and empowering them to make good choices about smoking early on. Throughout the campaign we’ll be sharing stories, videos, photos and illustrations on what young people think about smoking, why it is harmful, even when you’re young, and what dreams can be achieved by being smoke-free. Look out for us online, on Facebook and in schools!

About this blog

We want to help spread the word that smoking is not fun or cool – and that it’s not part of our mob’s culture or future. We’re proud of our community and we want to work together to make our mob’s future smoke free.

On this blog we’ll be sharing stories and messages from young Aboriginal people in the metro and northern Adelaide community about achieving dreams, and the impacts of smoking.

Instead of sharing cigarettes, we want to help young Aboriginal people get involved in fun and healthy activities, set goals and find your passion or dream to chase.

Keep an eye out for photoboard messages and stories from other young people in the community, and even some well-known local teams. It won’t be ‘boring’, and you can even participate in competitions and games to win prizes!

What’s going to be on this blog?

Facts about smokes

We’re not interested in lecturing you – most people already know that smokes cause terrible cancer and disease later in life. But we want to give you the facts about how smoking can affect you right now. We know facts can be boring but we’re going to do our best to make you #LOL#WTF and #OMG.

#YOLO so why not live life to the fullest? Whether you want to be a sports star or musician, have a family or travel the world, smokes can affect your future. Stay smoke free and achieve your dream!

We’ll be posting a whole bunch of inspiring content from people in our community who are doing just that!

MOST IMPORTANTLY: Tell us what you think!

We’re going to be out and about at events, in schools and at sporting clubs asking you what your dreams are and what you think about smoking. We’ll be sharing your thoughts right here on the blog.

Just like you, we love social media! We’re @notupinsmokes on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat (search for: notupinsmokes). Share your dreams or your thoughts about smoking on the hashtag #notupinsmokes.

Throughout the campaign we’re going to be running monthly online competitions and we’ve got a bunch of cool prizes planned. Make sure you check back regularly so you don’t miss out on your chance to win!
